A truly unique project located at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex within Tidbinbilla National Park, Benmax was awarded the contract for mechanical HVAC services for the new Deep Space 35 Antenna facility by the CSIRO, on behalf of NASA and the Australian Government. Designed by GHD consultants, the project is recognised as a benchmark installation with the design being duplicated throughout the world as the new standard for antenna construction.
A combination of domestic comfort cooling and process cooling systems makes the installation a mix of simplicity and complexity. The antenna pedestal office areas are served via a simple central air handler plant and reticulated air systems. The transmitter areas, combined with a complex controls system, are served from the central external plant. The central plant deals with both heat rejection from the antenna transmitter equipment and chilled water cooling systems to the transmitter heat exchangers. Heat rejection pipelines are used to remove waste heat from the transmitter via in slab pipework cast in to the outer slab of the antenna with additional cooling via a heat exchanger. Benmax successfully completed the project in 2014.
