Working in partnership with builder Kane Constructions, Benmax successfully delivered the mechanical services for the Australian War Memorial (AWM) Main Works Package 1 and Main Works Package 4 projects.

Delivered as part of the AWMs historic eight-year $550m major redevelopment, the work of the Benmax team supported the construction of the New Main Southern Entry, as well as extensive structural and refurbishment works for the heritage-listed Main Building.

The new Southern Entrance, designed by Studio.SC, was officially opened to the public in February 2025. Situated directly below the existing forecourt, the design has enhanced access for all visitors, providing protection from the weather and easy navigation between the new galleries and outdoor spaces.

A standout visual feature of the award-winning new entry is the stunning ‘oculus’, with the space also featuring a 250-person theatre, function room, public amenities, orientation gallery, and bookshop.

The experience of the Benmax team was particularly important in delivering the MWP1 and MWP4 project packages. These two major pieces of work involved complex and technical challenges including the elaborate architectural design requirements of the new entry, structural integrity of the 83-year-old heritage-listed building, and the complex mechanical systems throughout the site that have been expanded, refurbished and repaired countless times over the life of the precinct.

With the site also remaining operational and open to the public during works, Benmax was a key member of the collaborative project team working with stakeholders to support a complex and lengthy program of staged works.

Benmax successfully handed over the project to Kane Constructions in late 2024 and remains on site today completing additional upgrade works direct to the AWM.

Since completion, the New Main Southern Entry project has gone on to receive several industry accolades and we congratulate project partners for their achievements and well-deserved recognition.
