Benmax has extensive experience with the Canberra Hospital having successfully delivered a diverse range of project works at the major public hospital site located in Garran, Canberra.
Over many years the team have worked directly with ACT Health, and in partnership with contracted building clients, to deliver refurbishment and upgrade works in largely operational and occupied areas of the site to provide services for new buildings and health units established across the precinct, and to deliver contracted maintenance services.
Projects have ranged from minor HVAC upgrade works in areas including patient wards and specialist units, relocation of health services within the site, through to major plant and equipment upgrades including chillers, cooling towers, HHW and CHW systems, ductwork, and piping systems.
Major Chiller Upgrade, Building 1 – in 2019 the team delivered a complex upgrade of three chillers and associated plant equipment in the primary Building 1 plant room. Located at the highest point of the 10 storey building, the plant services multiple buildings and requires 24/7 chilled water supply for air conditioning and cooling of laboratory equipment. Performing the Lead Services Contractor role the team undertook detailed planning to ensure the works, inclusive of nine separate crane lifts, were carried out in a safe manner, minimised disruption at the operational site, and maintained continuous conditions throughout all stages of work.
Emergency COVID-19 upgrades – in 2021 following the most recent COVID-19 outbreak in Canberra, the ACT Government determined an immediate need to convert an existing ward into a dedicated and isolated COVID ward in preparation for an anticipated increase in admissions. Working with Health Infrastructure Procurement, Benmax completed work on an ICU exhaust fan installation to create a negative pressure environment for emergency beds in just one day/night receiving significant praise from the client.
The team remain on site today delivering a range of minor project works across buildings located at the precinct including MRI chiller upgrades, operating theatre upgrades, fire damper compressor upgrades and medical air upgrades, as well as general and preventative maintenance services.
