BIM coordination crucial for tight construction program

Revitalising Newcastle is a $650 million NSW Government program focused on attracting people, jobs and tourism to Newcastle.  A key initiative of the program has been the construction of a new major transport hub for the city, the Newcastle Interchange, a fully accessible, multi modal transport interchange located in Wickham.

Opened in October 2017, the interchange project is part of an integrated transport solution to help drive urban renewal and included the construction of train stabling and turn-back facilities, a new interchange building, signalling and communication work, track work, civil construction and road work.

Partnering with Harvey’s Newcastle, Benmax produced the mechanical BIM documentation and associated workshop drawings for the project. Traditionally, a project of this size would not have considered using BIM, however, the team at Laing O’Rourke Australia insisted that project partners utilise the technology to ensure the tight construction program would be achieved. Working with BIM draftsman from the Benmax team, Harvey’s utilised the benefits of BIM coordination to streamline the installation and achieve their project milestones.

Further stages of the interchange project, primarily the construction of the new light rail system, are due for completion in early 2019. For more information visit
